2019 KDF Scholars

We are delighted to introduce our two KDF scholars for 2019: Emily Graetz (left) and Alexandra Berry (right).

Emily hails from Albury, NSW, where she attended the Scots School and was elected school Captain in her final year. She excelled in her academics, captained her tennis team, and participated in basketball, netball, swimming and athletics. Emily is also passionate about drama and the arts, and was the lead role in several school musical productions. She was a member of the school band and choir, and achieved Grade 6 (Hons) in the flute.

Since starting at The Women’s College last year, Emily continues to make the best of all opportunities, achieving a Distinction average in her first year at university and participating in a range of extracurricular activities. She has played roles in several drama productions, including the Ensemble that enabled The Women’s College to win the Palladium Cup. She has also been involved with the Sydney University Musical Society and Sydney University Tennis Club. Emily was elected as the Undergraduate Student Representative for the Gender and Cultural Studies Department, and was an academic mentor for the Uni2Beyond Program for students with intellectual disabilities. In the longer term, Emily aspires to work in the field of women’s education.

Alexandra (Alex) was born in China, but grew up in Elderslie, Sydney. She was awarded Dux of Elderslie High School in Grade 12, and achieved a Distinction average in the first year of her Bachelor of Arts. Alex would like to use her Arts Advanced Studies (International & Global) degree to advocate for girls in third world countries, and also hopes to undertake Law studies in the future. She has a track record of leadership roles, including Prefect in Year 11 and Vice Captain in Year 12. Some of her extra-curricular activities have included debating at State level in high school and playing clarinet (Grade 6). Alex’s high school principal said that she, “encapsulates all the qualities and attributes of an exemplary student who is held in high regard by both staff and students. Her leadership qualities are characterised by her outstanding ability to balance leadership and listening”. Another referee described her as, “delightful smart, humble and gentle, with great people skills. Quite possibly a sleeping giant.”

Both Emily and Alex were invited to be part of the Dalyell Scholars Program for high achieving students at the University of Sydney, and we are delighted to have them join the KDF Scholarship family.
